Hugo & Roxy Perth Western Australia

Hugo and Roxy were surrendered to us originally in 2017 and had a wonderful home with their new owner until the family dynamics changed and they were surrendered to us in 2023. They have now found their perfect retirement home in the country with wonderful human and doggy company.
Their new owner writes.

"We were looking for a third dog after our mini dachshund Maude passed away in April. We are used to having three dogs in our family so when Maude passed on, we felt we were missing a piece. I had been keeping an eye on adopting via DRA, most were in the Eastern States making it difficult to meet and greet. Then... Roxy and Hugo, the seniors, came up in WA and I just had a feeling they were meant for us, never intending to have four dogs!

We took them on the two-week trial at the end of November and have not looked back. They have fitted in beautifully with our family - with some learning curves on who is boss of the pack (our border collie!), what cats are, and they are not to be chased, and what chickens are, and they are not to be eaten - a very dachshund response which we have managed with exposure training.

Roxy thinks she is a queen and will let you know if you are not paying the attention, she would like by giving you a little growl to say pick me up! She also gives a wicked side eye!! Hugo is a lover and will happily sit on your lap all day if you let him but goes crazy at bone time jumping about like a puppy. Hugo was a bit naughty at his previous home with human males, but we have not experienced this at this point, except the first day with the man of the house he was a bit wary. All other males over the festive season he has been great with.

They both love chasing off the foxes early in the morning with our other two dogs. We let them out and they roar off into the paddock chasing off a fox, with the poultry having sounded the alarm something is not right with cackling and honking - they both have learnt this noise and know what it means!! They both know the routine of the day and love coming down to the chook pen in the afternoon to let the chooks out.

So, we now have 3 dachshunds (although Roxy we think has a bit of chihuahua in her but shh don't tell her that ;)) and a border collie. All have settled into their rankings, and it is great to see the gang patrolling the property together."
