During the past few months, I had lost my two long haired dachshund brothers, Toby and
Levi, to old age and I was devastated in losing them both. I contemplated getting a new
puppy and my kids teased me saying, “If you get a puppy at your age, then you better leave
some money in your will to care for the dog after you kick the bucket!”
Eventually I put my name down to adopt an existing Dachshund that needed re-homing. It
seemed that most of them lived outside of WA and could not be brought here. One person
from Dachshund Rescue rang me and said that they sometimes have senior dogs for senior
people and if one came up, they would contact me. Weeks went by and I had almost given
up hope and was resigned to having no dachshund furry friend although there seemed to be
quite a few strolling around our local parks and beaches. Then out of the blue came a phone
call to say that Slinky would be available as sadly his owner had to return to the UK to care
for his dying father and elderly mother. Of course, our answer was “yes,” and his owner
John brought Slinky for a meet and greet, and we fell instantly in love with Slinky.
He has moved in and quickly a routine was established, and he has taken to us like a duck to
water and we thoroughly enjoy him and his puppy like antics. He is happy to go in the car, is
very sociable with no aggressive manners and when we go for a walk, we often get stopped
by people who want to pat “that lovely dog.” He charms all who come to our house.
It has been a bit of change for us because Toby and Levi were more of outside dogs than
inside ones. Slinky has taken over one of our couches and from there he rules the roost! We
– Patricia my wife and I – both love him and enjoy his constant companionship.
The adoption process was smooth and the following phone calls kept us in touch with where
things were. So thankyou Dachshund Rescue for the wonderful gift of a friendly furry friend
once more. We are truly grateful and thank God for Slinky.
