Alfie – northern beaches NSW

I think his new owner fell in love with Alfie as soon as she met him. She writes. Alfie is doing really well. We are so happy to have him. Thank you for selecting us! Alfie is a wonderful boy. He has brought us lots love with only some very minor challenges along the way. He loves nothing more than to cuddle up on the couch or to bake his belly in the sun. He’s not yet a fan of other dogs but has warmed very well to family and friends. Alfie is thoroughly enjoying his new home and surrounds. He goes for regular walks and greets the locals in the shops who come out to see him for a cuddle.

Zoe 11months Sth Brisbane QLD

We would like to thank Dachshund Rescue for bringing Zoe into our lives. We lost our beloved dachshund, Oscar, nearly 3 years ago, and though he can never be replaced, Zoe is showing us how to enjoy ourselves again. Thank you to Dachshund Rescue Aust. for all the wonderful work they do for dachshunds and supporting their families; and giving us a new family!

Hannah (5) Brisbane QLD

Hannah is a cuddle bunny with mountain goat dna. She is really coming out of her shell and loves running around. Hard to believe she is the same dog who never barked and was so scared of everything. Still a long way to go for this beautiful little girl, who had such a hard start to life. Massive thank you to Dachshund rescue for all they do and for allowing us to join the DRA family.

Amy (2) Brisbane QLD

At first Amy took a little while to get used to us which meant we had to work a little harder to gain her trust. But it was all very worth it because we have an adorable, cheeky and snuggly sausage. And she gets to play and cuddle with her new big brother ❤️

George – Newcastle NSW

George’s Story… Certain things take time, homing a rescue is not an overnight settle and in the case of a Dachshund like George, it took a few weeks. George was suffering from Separation Anxiety and stress brought on by the rocky road he had been traveling prior to surrender, this was exacerbated by a string of trials where he was given very minimal time to even know his way around the garden, this leading George to temporary foster care. When I picked George up, I could see in his eye he knew he was on the move again, he was quiet for the ride home and very reserved until he was introduced to my fur family of Dachshunds. As always introductions to others is a task in its self, but after an hour walk things started to simmer down between them all. George slept in his crate without a peep that evening. Day one, George didn’t leave my side and had a panic attack if I moved rooms to fast, he paced and panted all day, we had many accidents in the house and was not eating other than from my hand. This behaviour continued for day 2 and 3 with the added issue of being unsettled through the night. Day four was time to set a few boundaries, George had tried flexing his muscles for top dog position and was now eating extremely well. It was time for him to realise that I sometimes leave the house. I started closing doors on him and putting gates between us up for short periods of time, shutting him with the other dogs in the garden again for short lengths, this was developed into short trips to the shops without him. Over the following week, George had a few tantrums, we lost a dog bed, a cushion, a fly screen along the way but each day he settled quicker and quicker until we had no more tantrums or crying, this coincided with George getting to know the daily routine and much better walking behaviour. It took George about 2 weeks to learn and it took me about the same to know George. I have learnt among things that if the blanket comes off his head in the night it’s my job to replace it, that he likes to lie top to tail on the couch and prefers grass walks to the beach. George met his new adopter and forever home today, It was extremely hard saying goodbye to this big boy who I had just got to know. I can’t wait to hear his progress and how he settles with his new Dachshund friends. With Georges anxiety his new family are fully prepared to loose a cushion or two to and allow whatever time it takes for George to feel at home.

Evie (20 months) melbourne

Evie's young owner sadly had to re-home her well cared for dachshunds. The girls were both independent and were re-homed separately with DRA. Rescue de-sexed and vaccinated her ready for her new home. Evie has joined a family whose senior girl had passed away. Hamish the "westie" is very happy to have Miss Evie in the house. She has taken to the new home with enthusiasm. Evie doesn't like missing out on anything she loves going out exploring the new area. So much to see and do! Her former owner is thrilled to see her settle and happy. The dogs are having lots of attention and company something she was struggling with. DRA are extremely grateful for the new owning adopting these precious dachshunds. xx

Nala (20 months) melbourne

Nala's young owner sadly had to re-home her well cared for dachshunds. The girls were both independent and were re-homed separately with DRA. We attended to Nala's de-sexing to get her ready for her new life. Nala has been welcomed into her new home, Vicky is retired and loves having her buddy with her. Nala has a new name to start her new life"Ella".They have the perfect spot in Gippsland, a nice large backyard and lots of nice spots to go walking. Ella never looked back on her road trip home and then exploring the new house. She quite enjoyed having her new mum and toys all to herself! Ella is a very affectionate girl, she has enjoyed going out in the car and meeting new family members. Ella is living the life of luxury her former owner is happy to see her so settled.

Millie – Geelong

Gorgeous little Millie with her permanent head tilt is now happily settled into her new home. Her new family have always preferred to adopt their pets in the past including a mini foxie called Herbie and two wire haired dachshunds Fizz from Sydney pound and Max who came from DRA at 11 years of age. It was after Herbie's passing a few years ago that they felt they should add to their family once again. Their current rescue 12 year old Mabel who has sadly lost both her eyes prior to her adoption from a terrible mouth infection was showing signs of needing a new friend. Millie and Mabel have worked out the system of who sleeps on top of the blankets and who goes under them on the human bed. Sometimes Millie will give a little grumble if Mabel jumps up to where she is lying on the couch but all in all the girls sort it out between themselves and are often found snuggling next to each other. Millie likes to play fetch but hasn't quite worked out how to bring the balls back, she also loves playing with her toys and is learning to use the doggie door. Thank you to her amazing new owners who have opened their home up to another rescue.

Frank – VIC

Frank is a very handsome boy who came to DRA as his owners were in the process of moving and unable to take him with them. As Frank was used to living with other dachshunds we placed him in a home where there is another dog Toby. Toby had been grieving the loss of his furry friend but had recently enjoyed the company of two dachshunds who had been visiting so luckily he was used to dachshunds and their quirkiness. At first the two tolerated each other and had a few standoff moments but after a few days they have become best of friends. Frank is described by his new owners as extremely loving, affectionate, full of life and an absolute cutie as well!
