Betty Boo – WA

Betty Boo came to DRA after being abandoned in a residential park. She sure had her challenges to face, but she was in the good care of DRA now. Betty underwent a huge surgery to remove a 12cm lipoma on her tiny chest, large growth on her check, 3 mammary tumours and 2 teeth! The day after her stitches came out, she was adopted into her forever home. In the past three months, Betty’s life has changed dramatically for the better. She beat an episode of aspiration pneumonia and is on medication to help with her Cushing’s disease. As you can see in the photos Betty has come a long way and is looking happier and lighter. Betty still has some medical challenges to face, but this senior girl tackles everything with such strength and resilience and she will definitely have the love and support of her family and her adopted sister Bella by her side. Betty loves car rides and going out to the farm stables where the fresh air, freedom and smells just delight her. She loves her walks and snuggles with her mum and dad. Betty always wags her tail, so much that we think it’s going to fall off and will go up to anyone for a pat, only to promptly roll on her back to receive endless belly rubs. Betty is such a delightful addition to our family, and we are extremely grateful to DRA and all the people who have supported and cheered for Betty to get the love and care she so rightfully deserves. Mission accomplished DRA!

Pickles & Cheech South Australia

Pickles and Cheech have been welcomed into their new home where they are showered with lots of love and attention. These two little munchkins settled into their new home within a very short time and are both very content and relaxed. With plenty of laps to sit on and a garden to wander down to see relatives who live next door, Pickles and Cheech are never short of company. We wish you all the best Pickles and Cheech!

Archie (Eltham Vic)

Archie was from a loving home and it was heartbreaking for his owners but that time of sorrow and sadness as it was an extremely brave and hard thing to do to adopt him out, Leanne and her husband were full of excitement and wanted to give Archie a new start in life . They met Archie with his owners and straight away he and Luna their much loved mini Dachshund became friends within minutes. Archie spent 2 trial weeks with them and he had anxiety issues. They knew a risk to assume he'd fit into their lifestyle. They are very pleased and proud of the way he has been improving daily with the help of Luna. Archie and Luna are inseparable. From barking at air to destroying every toy in sight. Wherever Luna goes Archie chases behind. Including under my feet while cooking. They’re really like an extra pair of slippers. "I can’t thank Andie and Dachshund Rescue Australia enough. And I can’t imagine our lives without Archie in it."

Frankie – NSW

Frankie's Mum was finding herself increasingly overseas for work and as a result Frankie's life was spent on the move going from his home to the dog minders. This became increasingly unfair to Frankie and so on learning that Frankie was brought up on a farm, before going to live in the city, we thought Frankie might like to go back to his puppyhood with all the sights and exciting smells that the countryside brings. Frankie has done just that and is now living indoors with Benji, his new best friend and horses. He has settled in beautifully, particularly once he knew the daily routines, and his Mum thinks he's just gorgeous and very cuddly.

Louie – WA

With a toddler and another baby on the way, it was clear that Louie wasn't happy. He had become snappy causing concern to his owners. Louie is now living with a mature family of adults who have had dachshunds for many years. Louie is a much happier boy who also enjoys the company of his new brother, a dachshund called Ollie. Louie spends his days enjoying walks and sunbathing in the sunny garden.

Minnie – Richmond (NSW)

Hi. My name is Minnie. I’m a chocolate smooth hair mini. This is my third home. I can’t really tell my new owner much of my past, other than through my behaviour. My new family is huge! There is Maximus, another rescue. He is a little older than me and very energetic. He’s had a similar past to mine. Very handsome lad, but gee he needs a lot of attention. Similar to me. But I get on well with him, and he adores me, and we chase each other around the yard. What a big yard it is, even just the doggy yard is like half an acre! Then there is Kasper. He is a placid old fella. He has dreadlocks. But my new mum cuts them out. He has been here the longest. He is so chilled, I have learned to watch and learn. He and I get to stay together all the time, and he calms me. He’s assured me, that mum is loyal and has lots of time for us as she works from home a lot, and the property is very big and on weekends mum spends time with us everywhere. Then there is Ice. He is an albino deaf boxer and he is huge. I didn’t like him much in the beginning as I think he reminded me of a big dog that must have malled me before, as my mum found scars around my snout and belly. I know I was over reactive and bit him on his snout unnecessarily, as it took me a while to learn he was a big boof-head and meant no harm and both Max and Kasper completely trusted him. In fact, when I stood back and watched them, I could see he was always fascinated by Max and Kasper and keen to protect them and play with them. But mum had to have a lot of patience to let me learn to calm down and get to know his true character. I have given mum loads of trouble and she has been so patient to teach me. I used to pee and poo everywhere inside and really ruined the carpet. I didn’t know any better. I would always wait for mum to turn around before I would do a big pee inside. Well, after a lot of going back to basics, and routine, I am now crate trained, and will not do a pee or poo in the house and know she takes me outside plenty of times every day, and I know to do it outside. I do however get distracted, as I get sensory overload with so much to see and sniff - it is such a big property with so much going on, and I race everywhere and mum plants so much and has so many native animals visit, that I get so excited I sometimes forget that I’m outside to do my business. And mum thinks I haven’t spent much time outside, as I have the longest toe nails in the family. I am learning words like ‘sleep-sleep’, ‘outside’, ‘treat’, ‘pee-pee’, ‘poo-poo’ and I have learned that I can snuggle into my blanket in front of the fire place. Sometimes I stir Kasper up, and if I am calm, he will come and snuggle up with me. I am a super guard dog for mum, but I am learning I do not need to be, as mum lives in the country and it’s super safe here. I am now feeling comfortable with Ice, but I am still wary sometimes. I’m super gentle with mum, but still a bit wary and in fight/flight mode from whatever I went through in the past. I love it here and it’s so exciting, there is so much to take in but I am learning. I would one day like to sleep in mum’s bedroom at night, but understand that mum had to take it back to basics with the crate and toilet training. I know I am super smart like Max and Kasper and OMG Ice can only understand mum’s sign language and facial expressions - that is amazing! And Max has learned to dance with mum on signals and command - imagine what I can do, given what I have learned so far in such a short period of time! Signing off now as I like to snuggle in front of the fire on these cooler nights! And I do have a habit of wearing myself out by being hyper-energetic! Just as well I have a few acres to run around on! Oh…. And I don’t like lawn mowers, but can see mum is in control and I trust her, so I just stay behind her and watch what is going on…

Arnold – WA

Arnold was surrendered to DRA as he had been aggressive towards the children and anti social whilst out walking. He has now been place with a couple who were prepared to help Arnold and give him the training and time required so that walks and home life became pleasurable again. Arnold now enjoys spending time at the beach and he has a new sibling cat with whom he gets on very well with. Thank you to his new owners for giving Arnold a chance to become a chilled and happy dachshund.

Finnley & Juno # bonded pair bundaberg QLD

Four-year-old bonded pair, Finnley and Juno urgently needed to find a new home when their mum’s life circumstances changed dramatically. Luckily DRA was able to step in and within a couple of weeks (and after a 10 hour round trip!) the dynamic duo found themselves living in their forever home. Their new mum and dad are a very experienced dachshund family, who had recently lost the last of their three senior doxies and had a dachshund-sized hole in their life, which desperately needed to be filled. Finnley and Juno now live in the country, creating chaos and being time wasters and court jesters for their parents, who are home most of the day and are endlessly devoted to their new pups. Princess Juno (June Bug) pretty much runs the house, deciding when everyone gets up (because yes, they sleep in the bedroom), and when it’s time to eat, sunbathe and cuddle (Juno cuddles like a boa constrictor, complete wrapped around her victim's or throat and has been known to cut off air supply). She also has the very important jobs of supervising mum’s horse riding and keeping the feed shed free of rodents. Finnie has two power settings full on and full off. He is obsessed with the big red ball and has become a star soccer player. He has also been known to grab the lead line and take the horses for a walk! He is so energetic and athletic that he is getting booked in for agility classes in the new year. They also have lots of space to play zoomies and plenty of toys and balls to play with and destroy. And they’d also like to note that the meals and treats are top notch too! Mum and dad are working through some typical dachshund issues around insecurity, nervousness, separation anxiety and some fear aggression. But with patience, clear routines, training and lots of love they are making great headway. The whole family are deeply grateful to Karan from Dachshund Rescue Australia for helping them find each other and filling all their lives with love, joy and dachshund mayhem. And also, to Finnley and Juno’s former mum, who made the incredibly difficult and loving decision to send her babies to a new home. #adoptdontshop

Bodi – miniature smooth – Melbourne

Bodi has found his home with 2 other dachshund girls, Mabel and Penny, who have welcomed him into their home. From day 1 Bodi walked into the house and decided he was going to be staying there, but first of all he had to bring one of the dachshund girls around to approving of him staying. Once that was gained, Bodi pretty much knew he wouldn't be sent off anywhere else. However, there is still one challenge for Bodi to resolve, and that's the big scary Great Dane, who is also a member of the home. Thus far, Bodi has barked at him from the safety of the sofa, and has now progressed to waiting for Titan to get back on his bed, and he's now barking at him from a safe distance on the floor and with his tail wagging. Both Mabel and Penny are quite happy with Titan and being close to him, so it's a matter of a little more time, before he closes the distances between them! VIC
