Hetty Melbourne

In June 2025, DRA coordinated the adoption of Bernard (previously slinky) who was relocated from Sydney to Melbourne. Bernie is a 3 year old mini chocolate dapple. Bernard, the ‘site inspector’, gave the new digs the thumbs up and quickly formed an attachment with his humans, three resident ginger cats and the resident dog, phoebe - a German Pointer / Dane cross. Apart from his other duties as site inspector, and just being a regular dog, Bernard also assists in feeding the cats every morning. He is an amazingly calm, affectionate and inquisitive boy, who breaks hearts wherever he goes, socialising in cafes, on walks and at the beach. In October 2025, due to Phoebe being a senior dog, Bernard and the crew welcomed a second Dachshund into their home, through DRA. Henrietta / Hetty (previously Teddy) is a 2 year old mini chocolate. Whilst Bernie and Hetty hit it off quickly at their meet and greet, it was clear that our girl had a bit of ‘Sass’ so introductions of Hetty into the household needed to be carefully coordinated, slow and safe. Separation gates, introductions on lead, designated play times, pack feeds, treats, consistency and lots of positive reinforcement helped Hetty to transition into the family and find her place in the pack. A huge thank you to DRA - then entire team, for the work they do in matching Dachshunds with suitable families and the ongoing support, advice and encouragement they provide during the rehoming process. It was so reassuring to know that I had DRA arms around me as I tackled challenges I had along the way. We are thrilled with this family, and look forward to a cheeky photo update whenever they can. x

Chino (2) sunshine coast QLD

Our experience in dealing with Dachshund Rescue Australia was very positive from our first interaction. We first sighted “Chino” a 2 year old Dachshund, who was available for adoption, in November. We made enquiries expressing interest and requested information on Chino’s situation and medical history. Andrea provided everything we needed to know, for instance characteristics and behaviour patterns about the Dachshund breed. She quickly reassured us that Chino was a wonderful dog, but was honest enough to advise he was a little nervous and temperamental and thus would need special attention. He was from a very good family, who loved him dearly, however they were busy with young children and felt he would be happier with an older couple who could devote more time to him. We were still very keen to learn more and meet Chino, so we had a catch up in a local park, on the Sunday morning. As predicted Chino was nervous and reserved, however we agreed to the him home with us on a two week trial hopeful that he would quickly settle in. For the first couple of days, he gave us a very wide berth, keeping his distance, and mostly avoiding us. We gave him his space, and slowly encouraged to come to us using treats and walks which went a fair way to gaining his trust. By Tuesday evening he was sitting on our laps demanding a cuddle and a belly rub. We are now two and a half weeks down the track and he has settled in remarkably well. It really is wonderful to see this delightful little dog, feeling so happy and loved. We are both fully committed to this little fellow and are completely in love. Many thanks to Andrea from Dachshund Rescue, and also to Chino’s original family for taking care and training him sufficiently. We are very happy new owners
